About File Metadata Editor

This tool updates filesystem timestamps on an existing file: Created Date, Modified Date, and Last Accessed Date. Load the file first to review current values, update the fields, and save.

What Metadata Dates Mean

  • Created Date - When the file was originally created on the current filesystem.
  • Modified Date - The last time file contents were changed.
  • Last Accessed Date - The last time the file was opened or accessed by the system.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Select a file with the file picker, or paste a full local path.
  2. Click Load Dates to fetch the current timestamp values.
  3. Edit one or more date fields in the form.
  4. Click Update Metadata to save the new values.

Important Behavior Notes

  • When you choose a file from the browser picker, a working copy is created and edited.
  • When you provide a full file path, the original file at that path is updated directly.
  • Some operating systems or folders may restrict metadata updates due to permissions.

Common Use Cases

  • Standardizing document metadata dates for archive organization.
  • Correcting incorrect timestamps after file migration or restore operations.
  • Preparing files for systems that sort or process records based on date fields.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my date fields disabled?

Date fields remain disabled until a valid file is loaded. Use the file picker or provide a valid local path, then click Load Dates.

Will this change file content?

No. The tool updates timestamp metadata only. It does not modify file bytes or structure.

What if I see an access denied error?

The target file may be read-only or protected by OS permissions. Try running with appropriate access rights or moving the file to a writable folder.
